Deck and fence washing
Wood is the easiest surface to wreck with a pressure washer and the most satisfying to get right. We work with the grain at low pressure so it comes up clean instead of furry.
What the job includes
- Deck boards washed with the grain at low pressure
- Railings, spindles and posts done by hand
- Green algae film taken off the shaded and north-facing sections
- Fence panels washed on the side you look at, or both sides if you want it
- Everything rinsed down and left to dry evenly
Anything outside this gets quoted separately and shown to you before we start. We do not add line items after the fact.
Why cedar goes green here and what wrecks it
Cedar and pressure-treated lumber both go grey and green in this climate, and the green is algae growing in the surface of the wood rather than sitting on top of it.
The damage most people have seen on a deck comes from someone holding a narrow tip too close. Wood is soft, and high pressure tears the soft summer growth out from between the harder grain lines. The result is a furry surface that traps more dirt than it started with and will not take a stain evenly.
Done properly it is a low-pressure job with a cleaning solution and patience. If you are planning to stain or seal afterwards, this is the step that has to happen first and the wood needs a few dry days after.
Questions we get asked
Will this leave my deck fuzzy?
Not the way we do it. Furring comes from too much pressure held too close, which tears the soft grain out. We keep the pressure low, keep the wand moving with the grain, and let the cleaning solution do most of the work.
Can you stain or seal it afterwards?
We do not do staining. What we can do is get it properly clean and tell you honestly when it is dry enough to coat, which in this climate usually means waiting for a run of dry days rather than a fixed number of hours.
Does composite decking need this too?
Yes, and it is a common misunderstanding. Composite does not rot but it absolutely grows algae in the surface texture, especially in shade. It cleans up well and it needs even lower pressure than wood.
Do you do both sides of a fence?
We can. Most people do the side they look at, because doing both sides roughly doubles the labour. If the neighbour wants to split it we are happy to do the whole thing in one visit.
